“Jesus, what a mess,” Al said a short time later.

Al and I were alone in his office. The meeting with Charlie was over and done. Charlie had been relieved of his duties at the Sher but reassigned to one of Randolph’s smaller properties. Most guys in Al’s position wouldn’t have done that much. But a review of the schedule had shown that Charlie was out sick the day his own supervisor had covered the schedule tweaks that would occur during rehearsals for Temptation’s show. Yes, Charlie had exercised somewhat poor judgment when he realized Temptation was backstage, but the fact that he was there in the first place wasn’t his fault.

“So, other than all this, how’s it going?” Al asked.

“Oh, just dandy,” I said. If you overlook the fact that Dru Benson is a vampire. “If you overlook the fact that Lucas Goldfinch hates my guts. Right this moment, though, it’s a toss-up which one of us he would rather turn into his own personal voodoo doll: me or his boss.”

“Hey,” Al said. “He screwed up. He’s in trouble with Benson; he’s not going to get any sympathy from me.”

“Me, neither,” I replied. “But it doesn’t exactly make things easier, in either the long or the short run.”

Al was silent for a moment, his fingers tapping on the top of his desk. “So what aren’t you telling me?”

In terms of time elapsed, Al and I haven’t worked together all that long. But we know each other pretty well, and Al is one of the few humans I know who also knows about vampires. He doesn’t make a big deal of it, just says when you’ve been in Vegas as long as he has, you see everything.

“Nothing,” I said now.

Al grunted.

“Nothing I can’t handle,” I amended, and prayed I was right. It was a calculated risk, but I had decided Bibi wasn’t the only one I should be keeping in the dark about Dru Benson’s true nature. I wasn’t going to tell Al, either. If they knew what he was, there was a good chance that Dru Benson would be able to sense it, and that would greatly decrease their life expectancy.

“I mean it, Al,” I said now. “The minute anything changes, you’ll be the first to know. Meantime—”

“I know, I know,” Al said, with a wave of his hand. “I should leave you alone to do your job. It’s just I feel responsible is all.”

“I know you do,” I said. Another reason not to mention that a powerful vampire had taken up temporary residence at the Scheherazade. If Al thought he was deliberately putting me in major danger, he would do his best to yank me right back out. Then we would have no one keeping an eye on Dru Benson, no one who knew what he was.

He gave me a reluctant smile. “Just watch your back is all. And keep me posted.”

“Will do,” I nodded. “See you around.”

He walked me out of his office. I left him standing in
